"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

Happy 56th

My Mom and Dad celebrate #56 on February 19. Unlike last year, we won't be there to help celebrate.

Unfortunately, because it was quite fun last year.

But here are a few photos from the 25th anniversary celebration back in 1977. Taken on an old Kodak cartridge camera.

Mom and Dad look pretty dapper (and youthful) in top photo, as they inspect the loot. But heck, at that time they were younger than I am now. Plus it's pretty economical if you can get extra wear on your 25th anniversary out of the suit you wore to your wedding.

Photo #2 features some happy customers for whatever it is that Dolores is concocting. But they should be happy, click to enlarge and check out those bargain prices.

Photos #3 through #6 feature honored guests playing cards. Recognize them all?

Happy anniversary.

Super Bowl I - musings of a 10-year-old

This being Super Bowl day here in Arizona, I was thinking back to Super Bowl I (ok, it didn't have a roman numeral then). I remember that I was pretty interested in the game, and very much hoping the underdog (Kansas City Chiefs) would beat Green Bay. Probably because I was sick of Green Bay beating up on the Minnesota Vikings.

So I consulted my diary for specifics (click to enlarge).

We watched during Steve's birthday party held at "Uncle Casper's". I do remember going back and forth from the pool table in the basement of Raymond's house across the road, keeping an eye on the game, etc.

Other points of interest (at least interesting to me) from the diary:

On Sunday (1/15/67), the kids were sent to school while the pastor lectured the adults. That's the only time I remember that happening. I wonder what they talked about, maybe the Super Bowl?

On Friday (1/13/67), we "played with the electric train a lot" and "shot with the BB gun downstairs a bit." (We were shooting at a target drawn on the bottom of a cardboard box; the box was placed on its side and filled with newspapers. Thinking back, this does seem a bit dangerous. I recall some interesting ricochets in the shower area. But no injuries.)

On Thursday (1/12/67), I was parroting some criticism I must have heard about Lyndon Johnson ("Well he's a Texan. I do not agree with his policy - "The Great Society . . . But speaking as a loyal American I still don't care for him.") Not sure what triggered this unhappiness with government policy from a thoroughly uninformed 10 year old.

On Monday (1/16/67), I felt cheated out of a snow day - after all, it was very windy in North Dakota.
