"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

talking

Grandson appears to observe pretty much everything.  And now - starting with conversations with his parents - he's progressed to wanting to discuss what he's observed.  In detail.

Sure his technique could benefit from a bit more refinement, but this is quite an excellent start.  At least I can't stop watching this.  (Captured by PJ 15 May 2018.)

Hi everybody –

Happy Mother’s Day to Joy!

We were over at Paul Jr/Nedda house today to honor Patricia and Nedda (her first mother’s day).  Before we got there,  Paul Jr. and Nedda were taking “five-month-old” photos of Latest Romie.  Guess what – they dressed him in an outfit that Original Romie had given me (though we are guessing that Joy may actually may have done the shopping?)

I like to think about what happened here over the years:

   • Original Romie and/or Joy buy the outfit for me in 1956

   • Ernie and Helen take me for my studio picture in the outfit (no mere snapshot!)

   • Helen holds onto the outfit for 31 years, keeps it in good condition, gives it to Patricia and me

   • Patricia and I photograph Paul Jr. in it

   • Patricia holds onto the outfit for 31 years (coincidental time period), keeps it in good condition, gives it to Paul Jr. and Nedda

   • Latest Romie wears the outfit for his photo in 2018

   • Now it’s up to Nedda to keep the outfit in good condition for whatever happens next!

Photos below.

Pleasant thoughts about each of you today, thanks as always for being in our lives.  We feel very lucky.

Phantom Ranch 2018

[placeholder/more to come]

Well, we did it again - a group-of-20 had an amazing time hiking down to Phantom Ranch on 5 May for a two-night stay (preceding night at South Rim with our usual sundown reception).  Prior trips:  1997, 2004, 2007, 2014.  As always: countless fine memories.  This was a particularly good group.  Will post more later.

19 of 20 hikers - immediately prior to heading up the Bright Angel Trail (5:49a 7 May).
(Just missing our photographer, Nicole.) (With photo of our fax-savant, Patrick S.)

OK, this time all 20.

How it looked on the way down South Kaibab; some of our
group are those tiny figures in center.
