"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

The power of marketing

ASU's Schola Cantorum - a fine group to which CPG 'n me don't even belong - must be gunning for attendance records at its upcoming concert.

Just look at the eye candy they're using to lure in a crowd.  I hope there isn't some kind of riot when the attendees discover the brazen bait-and-switch.

Observing the start of another NFL season . . .

Not that its loss would have been a tragic setback for our culture - but I did want to preserve the below video.  DVRs do have a shelf life (as we've seen several times), and this clip has been sitting on our DVR way too long.

The murmurings of the replay ref and announcers at the beginning of the clip are mundane.  This is all about a Philly fan who is either very passionate, or lacks any sense of proportion given the utter insignificance of the official ruling, or - most likely - both.  (As a result of the coach's challenge, the Eagles are faced with second and goal from the six-inch line - instead of first and goal from the six-inch line.  Sheesh.)

I like how the fan appears to come to grips with the non-disaster - then loses it one more time.

Anyway, the NFL is back.  It's become a bit of a time-dominator, but RedZone does help.
