"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

three weeks with Ollie (and K&L)

[In conjunction with Ollie's glorious arrival(!) . . . and at the invitation of Kerry & Luis - I spent 29 May - 19 June in Arlington, Virginia; PJ had arrived in Arlington on 25 May and at this writing plans to return to Phoenix on 4 July.]

There is something deeply traditional, if not a bit sacred (and I don't think it's too much to so characterize it), about traveling to be present with one's daughter who "lives away" at the time of the arrival of a newborn.  Especially as this relates to the role of the mother/grandmother.

We've had, and been grateful for, precious early access to grandsons 1-3 - including hospital invites at the very earliest opportunity - all right here in Phoenix - incredibly gracious of the new parents to share these moments with us.  This was a bit different - after all it's been nearly 32 years since PJ and I were in repeated all-day-every-day contact with a newborn. OK it's not entirely analogous to those 1980s days because we didn't have the same level of responsibility.  But still.  Thanks to Kerry and Luis (and of course Ollie), we were able to experience all these days in full . . . in a way that wouldn't quite happen in Phoenix because there we are proximate to our normal lives (a very good thing, just different-by-definition).  Bottom line this was special, we wonder will it ever happen again?

K surrounded by her "small creatures"

One does forget (though memories quickly flood back!) how life-with-a-newborn telescopes into three-four hour cycles (sometimes less) of eating, sleeping, diapering, etc.  With it-never-gets-old baby-gazing at every opportunity between.  Not much bandwidth for visitors or tasks.  Simplifies things!  Skipping news, sports (even including the NBA finals though that was partly a time-zone thing), twitter feed, etc. Didn't miss it much (perhaps something to learn here).

Ollie getting his very first bath (yes it's fun to see this event)

Kerry and Luis seem so natural as first-time parents - that was nice to see.  Could they have gotten through this first stage on their own?  Of course (and they would have done great).  But PJ and I - by far moreso PJ - helped with many basic household and newborn-handling tasks, errand-running, etc.  And K&L claim they benefited from watching us (again, much moreso PJ) doing all those Ollie-handling tasks.

daddy with his first-born (for the moment, swaddled in the "Ollie" brand blankie)

We were more or less together continuously for three weeks (quite a bit more in PJ's case).  I know it had to be tiresome from time to time for K&L - I mean their space was continually invaded (even if by helpers) - but somehow they never showed it.  As with prior visits, it's effortless and fun to be with them in their home.  Plus we liked the various thoughtful touches incorporated into our basement quarters.

as described below - we happened to have in our travel stuff the clippers
used on our kids - which in turn had been picked up from Ollie's
Great-Great Grandpa Mike Bormann . . . PJ does the honors here

Below are some details of my time in VA.  But moreso when I look back on these days I want to remember how it felt.  There is a certain "glow" around these days with the newborns (I know I used that term with the prior three grandchildren but blithely repeat myself). Also as observed with Romie, Xavi, Leo - the fleetingness of the newborn phase - it goes past so quickly - there is so much busyness with the tasks - parents are exhausted, mother is physically recovering - put this all together and the details of these first days can be rather difficult to remember, and then the newborn very quickly is not-a-newborn-anymore.  All the more reason we appreciated being onsite for this one.

two buddies - a familiar sight
during the second shift

Little things that I wouldn't otherwise remember.  Newborns with what I'll call the startle reflex - as you move them around (esp. up/down) or just because, they kind of throw up their arms, sometimes shaking them, it somewhat alarms the newborn, counteracting this is one of the benefits of swaddling.  Watching Ollie reminds that even after just a couple weeks, this is much less disconcerting for the bebe.  Learning so fast!

Ollie immediately so very interested in looking at the person holding him - even right after being born - is he really making, or trying to make, some level of eye contact this early?  Seems yes but really?  After a couple weeks or so there is no doubt that he is seeing more/better, focusing.  More awake time.  Newborn phase passing by in a blink.

The little sounds the newborns make while working on the bottle.  The fresh way they smell; the way they nestle in under one's chin.  Scrawny little legs with surprising power.  The way they recognize and respond to mommy & daddy (perhaps because these were the voices they heard so regularly in the womb?)

All signs indicate that these two shall get along famously.
Mae was endlessly fascinated by the newest family member.

The ridiculous cuteness of their little outfits; I prefer Ollie's "fox" outfit (and am excited to learn Xavi has the same glorious get-up!) Gifts received and arriving from family and friends - fun to look at these and consider the thoughtfulness that went into them.  (Plus the immediate family has some really-current expertise as to what works.)  The phone calls coming in from the siblings.

Perhaps nothing new or startling here, but truly a joy to observe first-hand and in detail.

Speaking of Mae - the Arlington office of the Phoenix Law Group features an alert guard dog!

courtesy of Maga-Pedro babysitting, the four of us had a lovely evening down at the
Wharf (Hank's Oyster Bar); weather and company couldn't have been nicer

Also as with Romie, Xavi, Leo - how being around the newborns (Ollie of course here) makes me, at least, think constantly about all the generations I've known.  Remembering phrases we used with our children; phrases we heard our parents and grandparents use.  Singing "bye-o-bye-o baby" and "you are my sunshine" - Helen Bormann Gales and Mike Bormann, respectively, would have been so happy to hear this.  I even trotted out "Du du liegst mir em herzen."

we so enjoyed regularly seeing Pedro and Maga

Minutiae:  when it came time for Ollie's first fingernail-clipping exercise - PJ recalls old clippers that she had used with our five - too long a story as to how they originally came into my possession in 1974, but yes these were my Grandpa Mike Bormann's nail clippers way back when.  Yes I liked watching my wife clip our grandson's nails with my grandfather's tool that she had used with our young ones . . . and she used the same technique as pioneered-by-necessity with Nicole in 1981, i.e. avoid untoward snips by waiting until the newborn is fast asleep.

much enjoyed seeing Steve and Carrie and their (suddenly not so) little family
Ollie was not the only "small creature" in the house - I'm referring to 18-month-old Mae - I thought this went as well as one could hope.  Mae super-interested without being aggressive; inspecting car seat, swing, all other devices; fascinated by Ollie-in-bassinette, to the point of climbing the stairs for a better vantage point.  Luis in particular very good at assisting with the familiarization process.

great to see Ricky & Bea as well (fortuitous timing plus they made the effort to work in a visit . . . )

We settle into our routine.  As a share-the-load method, overnights break into two shifts - L&K take the first shift (PJ and I off to bed by 10:30p plus/minus); PJ and I are scheduled to take over at say 3:30a.  Except somehow this evolves to 2:30a for PJ (who can't seem to wait), while I sleep in until 5a and even a 5:45a and a 6a once (rationalizing on the basis that PJ had it under control - also I was pretty busy with work (which went well in K&L's basement) (and high-level lawyering, or whatever I'm only-occasionally doing at this point, requires sleep, right?))  PJ with good success keeping Ollie schweeping after first feeding of second shift until more or less "normal" morning time, when K&L would come down the steps, we would be greeted by happy-rested Mae, the coffee-brewing process would start, and away we went for another fine day.

a fine little family!
Ollie as a schweetie-pie from Day One.  Those little overnight visits with him - every bit as heartwarming as recalled from 30+ years ago (and more recently!)  Couldn't get enough of holding him; those wondrous moments when he's fed and changed and happy-placid - during which time (to repeat) he had an incredibly charming way of making eye contact, so nice.

how nice that POC 'n NOC were able to visit!
Pedro and Maga arrived in Virginia a few days after Ollie's birth - this was excellent in all ways - they were helpful with babysitting (freeing us to go to the wharf one evening for a fine dinner at Hank's Oyster Bar, plus attending a Nationals game (per below)) - but the best part was the regular low-key get-togethers (once including Luiso Berrios) - an excellent shared experience. K&L had lined up a professional photographer to come to the house for a shoot, so all the grandparents gathered for this (samples below).

our first time at a Nationals game (D'backs win!)

Ricky and Bea were in town and made a point to stop by - their late afternoon visit was a lot of fun.

Also saw Kim and Ike and Zara, plus Christina; also the Jackshaw family - excellent visits that also went by too fast.

this turned out well! - Nick and Christina were at the game with us (and Blue Jacket after)

And it turned out that the Diamondbacks were in town - so we were joined by Nicole for several days (and a couple overnights), also saw POC a couple times.  Had a fine outing to the Nationals stadium for a game on Saturday 15 June (thanks, POC) - Dbacks win, Nick and Christina join us, we swing by "Blue Jacket" for quite-excellent beers after - this was a fine evening.

pretty much my favorite thing
about hanging out with Ollie - he
seriously pays attention!

And it happened that we were in VA for Father's Day - in addition to a fine chat with my dad (63rd time I've had Father's Day with him!), we observed Luis's first Father's Day - and were joined by Pedro and Maga - a fine Sunday.

On my last day before returning to Phoenix, Kerry and I finally had a (or took the) chance to check out a new place less than a half-mile from their house  - Meridian Pint - we were pretty pleased with the beer selection there (not to mention the fried oysters, of which we ordered a to-go portion for PJ).  Then we ordered dinner from Lost Dog - oh that strange-but-fine Polynesian pizza - and played Five Crowns a bit.

The next morning it was, sadly, time to get to the airport.  I think this was the longest that I've ever been "away from home" - but the time just flew by, K&L (& O, now) couldn't have been better hosts or more delightful companions - sorry to leave them (and my little wife for a bit longer also).

at Meridian Pint on my last evening,
sad to be leaving . . .

Repeating per above - this was a fine and unique experience - not to be forgotten.

[Below is a quick sampling of the professional photographer's very fine work (the key players plus PJ's quite fine blanket.]

Ollie's here!

a little family is ready to go out into the world . . .

Beyond delighted to report that grandchild #4 arrived safe and sound on Thursday 30 May 2019 at 3:02p.  Congrats and thanks to Kerry & Luis.  Oliver Oscar Rossello weighed 6 lbs 14 oz and measured 22”.  Ollie arrived with a delightful habit of looking the person holding him (Luis being viewee #1) right in the eye – a complete charmer from the get-go.

the team is ready to get this done . . . after all, how long could it really take?
Kerry was quite the trooper – as were her primary supporters (Luis and PJ) in their roles – the three of them went to the hospital at 4p on 28 May – her doctors waited out every chance before finally going c-section in the afternoon of 30 May.  I flew out from Phoenix on 29 May thinking (incorrectly as it turned out) that I might have trouble showing up before Ollie did.

one of the very first pictures (a keeper)

hi Mommy!!

PJ had arrived in Virginia on 25 May and the both of us settled in for longish stays, as I’ll describe elsewhere.  Patrick and Shane were in NYC about this time so they took the train down to DC for a <24-hour visit (including seeing Ollie at the hospital on the “day of”) – fun!

took first bottle like a champ
But enough about we visitors – this moment is all about Kerry & Luis & Oliver.  Somewhat surprisingly given what they (or at least Kerry) went through – mommy and bebe were discharged back home on Saturday 1 June.  Yes, Mae was happy to see them.  The little nursery is delightfully arranged. The home is cozy as ever, flooded by wonderful light moving around throughout the day.  And the little family is off to a lovely start.

These are wonderful things.

baby shower

The group here has lots of current experience throwing baby showers (see here and here) - and this expertise (accompanied by quite a bit of prep work) was evident in the fine results for the baby shower held for Kerry & Luis here at 11419 on Saturday 9 February.

Per usual I was not invited, but a few photos were gathered nonetheless (not a very representative sample, sorry).  And I did get to hang out at a nice after-shower-party, and of course it was quite delightful having everyone here in town for a few days before/after the shower.  Also turned out that Charlie and Beth were in town as Charlie was attending some sort of robotics conference at Camelback Inn.

Here's what I have for photos:

the stars of the show!

some of the key attendees/planners (but missing PJ)

meanwhile a few miles away at PJr/Nedda house on Shea - the boys' party gets a little wild

meanwhile across the country in VA, Mae holds court amongst, naturally, her courtiers

the after-shower-party was quite entertaining, including a Sequence battle

Virginia visit (October 4-8, 2018)

Mae was all grown up since our last visit!

Visit #2 to Virginia for 2018; this one quite delightful but seemed way too short.

Some highlights - dinner (and big news) at Lyon Hall on arrival night; traveling to Mike's and Ally's new-ish home in Maryland for dinner on October 5 with Charlie, Beth and Mark there (and of course Palmer); a couple breweries, including Atlas; travels to the seafood area; seeing Mae all grown up since the last visit; and back to the Boo-tique at Target.

But mostly - we like hanging around the house with Kerry & Luis (OK also walking over to Westover Market).  We feel entirely at-home there.  Cards, chatting, etc.  We'll look forward to the next time.

Atlas brewery was quite fine.

Visiting Ally & Mike & Palmer ( plus Charlie & Beth & Mark)

We ran into Steve, Carrie, Piper - and Mortimer Moose - at Target, of course.

K's August visit

this guy seemed happy to see K
K visited us here in AZ between 9 and 14 August!  We visited a few restaurants; had a meal at each of the Phoenix-resident-family homes; celebrated Paul Jr's #31 on Friday 10 August; mostly enjoyed being together.  Spontaneous road trip to Tucson on Saturday 11 August - it was a bit of a nostalgia tour for K; visited U of A campus and the Pi Phi house; also wandered around the downtown area and enjoyed pretty amazing weather (dinner at Penca).  Played 5 Crowns and sampled some of the local breweries as we roamed.  Overnight at the local Best Western.  Fun and highly random trip!  We of course were sorry to see K leave on Tuesday 14 August.

sampling of our restaurant/brewery gatherings in Phoenix, Gilbert, Tucson (Borderlands my Tucson favorite)

Nice experience at Pi Phi - the girl on duty took the time to show K around - including seeing
her old room (upper R); K stands in just about the same spot in lower R when moving into that same room
15 years plus one day earlier (with orange doggie guarding her goods).

yes it was fun wandering around Tucson with this group (plus photographer-NOC)

Virginia visit

PJ and I traveled to Virginia for a January week, and had our typical ridiculously fine time.

via GIPHY

Some highlights:

Picking up Mae, and related adventures - this was a fine trip-within-a-trip - our DC flight landed early evening on Friday 12 January; K&L picked us up at the airport; we head directly to Richmond for a sleepover as part of a dog-nabbing expedition. K drives us through pretty much steady-driving rain (though temps are rather warm).  Richmond may look a bit the worse for wear, but we definitely can see that it would be a worthwhile place for a longer visit.  We check in - "The Graduate Hotel" - nice, definitely not a chain.  K&L had reserved a table at a delightful little restaurant that was still serving dinner as we near 11p ("Saison") - fits the bill perfectly  - among other treats, we are a fan of beers from a local brewery named "The Veil," and we (wisely, as it turns out) make a note of the place.  After:  nobody wanted a pillow fight so we just went to bed.

Perly's breakfast - yes.

Breakfast on Saturday (13 January) is at Perly's - downtown delicatessen recommended by Tom/Kellen - it was wonderful.  And the portions were immense, which turned out to be a good thing since we didn't really eat again for say 12 hours. Then we hit the road for the breeder's place in Spring Hope, North Carolina.

Puppy selection successfully completed.
PJ and I were included in the puppy-pickup by pure coincidence, but it sure was fun.  Have never driven through these parts, except perhaps as part of long-forgotten Glee Club touring.  So that was neat.  Have never seen a puppy breeding place - much larger than we expected (and than the website probably led one to expect) - but seems like they have things pretty well in hand.  Be that as it may - the important thing was to FIND THE RIGHT PUPPY.  There were two from which to choose - helpfully marked with a dab of blue and pink paint, respectively - Blue had some charms and started strong in the interview process; but soon was outstripped by Pinkie, who featured a floppy right ear and a rather delightful little personality. In the end, the choice was pretty easy - Pinkie was sent off to the clean-up zone, Blue was relegated to the next-in-line dog-chooser (a kindly lady with whom K&L exchanged digits so that the sisters could remain in touch), K&L did some adoption business, and "Mae Westie" (fka Pinkie) was officially theirs!

Quick clean-up of Pinkie; shortly followed by formal introduction of Mae Westie.

OK now we have a long drive home.  Stopped at Starbucks for caffeine, and for MW to do some business.  We received a free slushy/smoothy type drink that looked promising but was immediately dumped on the floor of the car between the seats (sad sad). MW handled the car ride well, as did each of the adults. To keep up our strength we pull off in Richmond and visit The Veil. Things are different with new-pup in tow, and PJ volunteered to wait in the car with MW; they seemed to get along famously.  K&L and me are pretty happy with what The Veil is doing.

Road warriors.

Then we finish the road trip, order in some food, try to figure out MW's sleep arrangements, play a bunch of Five Crowns, and pretty much enjoy recapping a really-really fun trip-within-a-trip.

Seeing area friends - PJ and I always enjoy seeing K&L's fine DC-area friends - on this visit, this happened primarily on Sunday evening.  The usual suspects showed up in force and ready for fun; all met and played with MW; lots of chatter; interesting beers; we ordered in pizza; semi-monitored NFL playoff games (featuring Mike/Ally/Palmer departing moments before a miracle Vikings finish); followed by Five Crowns (me benefiting from Kellen's inadvertent largess); and that was pretty much it for a fine evening.

With Mike, Ally, Palmer

Late-night Five Crowns with this crew.

Pedro and Maga happened to be in town when we were.  And we took advantage by fitting in two get-togethers.  Item 1:  the six of us gathered for dinner at Le Diplomate on Monday evening - great food (in the same booth where we dined back in October); great company.  Item 2:  we (with MW in tow) drove out to the Rossello homestead for dinner on Wednesday evening.  Manny & Kristen happened to be in town.  As you might imagine, this grouping made for a fine/fun evening.  Maga's cooking was pretty wonderful.  Somehow we failed to take photos (or I failed to collect them).  What would have been even more valuable:  video, even audio, of Luis's persistent sniper-ish commentary at the dinner table - not sure I've heard him funnier, which is saying something.  We suspect Manny's influence was partly to blame (or credit)?

Lots of this kind of action by
our intrepid new owners.
Doggie management.  Getting everything lined up with the new pup was a major activity of the week (I contributed little value).  Constant "walk the dog" trips to the backyard by K&L; as temperatures plummeted, this was impressively responsible behavior. (OK we also had to clean up messes occasionally, though they were rather small messes.)  Trips to the vet (where MW was appropirately fawned over, I'm told) and the trainer; visits from the dog walkers; testing food, toys, sleep patterns and location (downstairs?  nope, MBR), etc. They definitely found a nice/cute pooch.

Hanging out at the house. We did this a lot, due to MW and the weather - and we enjoyed it a lot.  K&L house is cozy; our downstairs quarters are ideal; I had a fair amount of work left over from recent transactions, and it was pleasant to sit in that well-lit kitchen area and kind of work but also keep an eye on everything.  Many Five Crowns games.  Consistently good food & beers.  Unfailingly pleasant.

Westover is a fine neighborhood place.

Puppy scenes.  I'd never been around a pooch this teensie.

Neighborhood stuff.  Notwithstanding prior paragraph, we did get to most of the local favorites - Peruvian chicken; Lyon Hall lunch with K; Westover for fine beers and those glorious pulled pork nachos; etc.
My assistant.

Office visit.  We also stopped by K's office on Thursday - it was nice to see with our own eyes the high regard in which she is held, and how warmly folks interact with her.  Difficult line - to be professionally successful/respected yet likable on a personal level - not surprisingly, she seems to be finding it.  We are proud.

The week absolutely flew by.  It was kind of sad to say goodbye after being together pretty regularly the past few months, and with a few months ahead prior to the next flurry of visits.  But it's a lucky thing to feel that way.

Until next time (airport drop) . . .
