"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

This Place is Shaping Up

Update on CPG's house. I hadn't been over there in about a month, and lots of progress has taken place. It's only too bad that we don't have more "before" photos. Popcorn ceilings have been removed throughout (which I'm told involved a ton of labor). Wood flooring has been put down throughout. The yellow paint in the main living area is history. Nice trees in back yard. Etc.

In CPG's room, the popcorn ceiling was removed, carpet pulled, and first coat of paint put on. So our task last Saturday (April 21): lay wood flooring, finish painting. Got started about 1p.

Top photo: CPG and enterprising assistant, Steve Buck, ponder the floor installation task with unwarranted optimism. (The portion shown as laid down in the photo had to be taken apart . . . and we started over from the other side, to match the line of the wood in the hallway.) You also can see the paint edging needed where ceiling and wall collide.

We did finish up the flooring (except the "quarter round" edging). Experienced some stress regarding whether we had enough product, and ended up at the point where every last piece was used. The product really was quite simple to put in, once we had the right starting methodology. One problem was breaking saw blades trying to trim pieces (at least until master bladesman Blaha was called in, per photo 2).

I pretty much watched the flooring process, then did the painting while CPG started moving in furniture. As you can see in bottom photo. Finished around 8p. The place looks great, will post some other views in future.
