"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

Lockett's Meadow 2009 (20th anniversary)

Patricia and I took a quick but most fun trip up to Flagstaff on Saturday, October 17-18. Main purpose was to hike the trail from Lockett's Meadow up to the Inner Basin. It was our first time on this trail since 2005 (reported here). We were pretty late in the season, but the weather was unseasonably warm in Phoenix, so temperatures were perfect for this up in Flagstaff.

The hike was delightful as always. Quite a few hikers, gorgeous day, brilliant colors at the trailhead and the lower part of the trail, more leaves had dropped as we approached the 10,000 foot level. We took our time, and took lots of photos. Sat in the meadow a bit after the hike and sipped a Chimay (white) and glass of wine. This is really a wonderful area and should not be taken for granted.

Something else interesting was that we have never walked downtown Flagstaff on any of our visits there over these two decades +. This was fun; ended up sipping and eating at a place named Cuvee 928 - excellent. Fun crowd. And enjoyed watching the games.

I later realized that this is the 20th anniversary of our first trip to Lockett's Meadow. That time we had five quite young kids in tow - young enough that for big chunks of the hike I was carrying Patrick, and Patricia was carrying Paul Jr. N, C, K trudged along on their own just fine. I'd guesstimate we've hiked the trail about half of those 20 years.

And will be back.
