"In his domestic administration my father had this system . . . to keep a journal and insert in it all occurrences of any note . . . A record very pleasant to look at when time begins to efface the memory of events, and very well suited to get us out of perplexity: When was such and such a thing begun? When completed? What retinues came? How long did they stay? Our trips, our absences; marriages; deaths; the receipt of happy or unhappy news . . . An ancient custom, which I think it would be good to revive, each man in each man's home. And I think I am a fool to have neglected it." (Montaigne, Book I, Essay 35 (publ. 1580))

Flagstaff 4th of July

PJ and I always find Flagstaff to be entirely amusing.  For the 4th of July weekend, we were joined there by NOC, POC, CPG, PJr. Billy, Sara.
PJ visits Arboretum; San Francisco Peaks in background.
My little wife at Flagstaff Arboretum.
PJ and I arrived several hours ahead of the rest (on Thursday 7/3); we made a long-deferred stop to the Flagstaff Arboretum; quite lovely; we won't hurry back.  After check-in:  lunch at our favorite:  Criollo.  The rest of the crew eventually showed up; walked into downtown Flag; snacks and beverages at Tinderbox Annex; dinner at Criollo; a couple stops betwixt/between.  Late-night games/shenanigans.

Martane's - amazing intersection of quantity and quality.
Striking gold at the t-shirt shop (so to speak).
4th of July was sporadically rainy.  We might have seen the local parade with the slightest effort at planning; oh well.  Much "should he?/should he not?" analysis regarding POC's potential participation in the local hot dog eating contest (POC reluctantly takes a pass).  The analysis included brainstorming not always appropriate methods for POC's posse to support his would-be participation.

Heavy-duty CAT-hoops at Mother Road Brewery.  (Notwithstanding Ed's silly grin.)
Massive and awesome breakfast at Martane's; wandering around downtown; PJr and CPG found ridiculous cat shirts at some shop downtown; PJ bought psychedelic kitty shirt for me; waited out the rain at some new place in downtown Flagstaff; then a lengthy, v. pleasant session at Mother Road Brewery.  Where cat-shirt-inspired games of "CAT" (in lieu of "HORSE") ensued.  Nicole turned in the shooting performance of her lifetime.  But still couldn't compete with YT.  Weather turned perfect, this was a fun experience.  Including our new friends Ed/Lisa.  Eventually:  dinner at some sushi place that was surprisingly good; more late-night games/shenanigans.

Nonsensical hanging around at Mother Road Brewery.  We did provide
invaluable encouragement to the pedal pub patrons.
5th of July - brunch at Josephine's.  Nothing wrong, but we recall why we had decided that it wasn't worth returning.  PJ and I stayed an extra night; the rest returned to Phoenix after brunch.  We wandered around Flagstaff, hung around the room, ended up with a lights-out meal at Brix.

We will keep returning, much enjoy Flagstaff.

I hauled along my trusty Narrative Clip, which contributed the photos in the short clip below.  The quality isn't always the best, but the camera does catch shots not otherwise taken (example at 2:07 of the video).
